Founded in 1983 by former researchers, ECONOTEC started a government consulting business in 1987 by developing indicators allowing a better understanding of the energy consumption at a macro level. Thus it created the Scoreboard of the Walloon Region and since 1993, it is the Belgian partner in the European ODYSSEE project (www.odyssee-mure.eu).
Since 1993, it has been performing predictive analyses of energy consumptions and emissions of air pollutants, as well as assessments of emission reduction potentials. This has gradually led to the development of the EPM model. Since the 2000s, ECONOTEC also focuses on assessing the impact of policies and measures.
These skills have enabled it to establish national or regional plans or programmes for managing energy efficiency or reducing air emissions.
In industry, ECONOTEC was the linchpin of the branch agreements for improving energy efficiency in Wallonia. In this context, it also played the role of expert, carried out the first energy audits of major industrial sites and developed the ‘EPS Coach’ software.
For over 15 years, ECONOTEC has also been developing and structuring national efforts for implementing Energy Information Systems (EIS) in French speaking countries of West Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
